I have called the attention of the Police & Magistrates to paragraph 36 of this report.
It appears that the small fines inflicted by them on persons who are prosecuted for cutting down or destroying young trees are insufficient for the purpose of protecting the young plantations. They have ample powers, being able to award a fine not exceeding one hundred dollars ($100) and imprisonment, in default, with or without hard labor, not exceeding three months, or to order fourteen days' imprisonment without the option of a fine.
